Traditional Easter Games and Some New Easter Activities for Children – Part II

Spring is a wonderful time of the year. Not only does it herald the return of sunshine and warmth, but it also brings one of the biggest holidays: Easter! Easter is loved by both adults and children. Adults get to visit with friends and family and eat great food, while children get to go hunting for eggs left by Easter Bunny and receive fun presents. And though the egg hunt is a really great, traditional activity, it is unfortunately not enough to keep the kids happy and busy all Easter Sunday.
Luckily, there are other activities and games you could put together to keep children entertained. So here are some fun Easter activities to keep the kids happy!
Easter Egg Piñata
Pinatas come in all shapes, sizes, and themes, and luckily that includes themes that are appropriate for Easter! Easter is a big holiday, so your local party goods store is sure to have piñatas that are egg, bunny, duck, or chick shaped. Or if you don’t want to buy one pre-made, you could always make your own into any shape you desire. Once you have your piñata, fill it with Easter candy. This can include candy eggs, jelly beans, chocolate bunnies, or something else holiday themed. Or, if you’re worried this is too much sugar, you could mix in some little Easter stuffed animals, like stuffed chicks, plush baby ducks, or stuffed bunnies.
Before actually having the kids take turns trying to break the piñata, you have to set it up. Remember that you must have it at a safe height, because if the objects inside fall from too high of a height there could be an injury. Also, attach it to something sturdy so the whole structure doesn’t come down, because you don’t want the piñata itself falling down and hitting someone. Just remember these tips and you’ll have a fun, safe way to entertain everyone.
Pin the Chick on the Egg
While we’re all aware of the game pin the tail on the donkey, it pays to remember that there are other holiday variations. Pin the chick on the egg is one of these variations. To create, all you need to do is draw an egg on a piece of cardboard. To make it look nicer, you could paint the egg, or cover it with some tissue paper. Then, tape some tweed on the back of the egg so that you have a small hoop to hang the cardboard with. Or you could use hooks you already have for paintings and frames. Hang it someplace that works for you. Some good places are the inside of a door, like the front door or a basement door. Then all you need is the chicks. Get a few small plush chicks, put tape on their bottoms or beak, and lie them down in a box and you are ready for the game.
Obviously, the game is almost the same as pin the tail on the donkey. Tie a blindfold around the first contestants eyes, a small piece of cloth or a clean dishtowel will often work find, and spin them around until they are disoriented. Then tell them they have to find the egg, and pin the chick to its top. Pinned correctly, and it looks like the chick is coming out of the top of the egg. Let the other kids cheer them on and yell out guidance as they try to pin the chick. This game has the advantage of being easy to play and set up, and can keep the kids entertained for a fair amount of time. For a prize, you could give the little chick to the child who manages to pin it correctly at the top of the egg.
So there you go! These two fun and simple to set up games will keep the children at your Easter gathering happy and entertained. Not only will these activities be fun for everyone to watch, but they will also create memories of a great holiday that these children will remember for years to come. Happy Easter!

The Plush Cow and the Different Breeds [of Cow]

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – The Plush Cow and the Different Breeds [of Cow]
Young children are very fond of soft toys in which they can easily recognize the animals they have first learned about – plush bunnies, stuffed pigs, and plush cows, for example. A plush cow is a terrific first-time stuffed animal for a child next to the teddy bear as it’s an animal they are quite familiar with when it comes to how they look and sound.
Cows are the adult females of the cattle family. In the United States, there are three types of cattle: the dairy cow which is developed to produce milk, beef cattle which are raised for meat, and cattle that serve more than one purpose such as producing both milk and meat.
The body of a dairy cow is wedge-shaped with lean shoulders and thin legs. While their head and neck are small, their milk bag, or udder, is very large. Both wild cows and cows bred for beef can only supply enough milk for 6 to 10 months so as to feed a calf. Through the use of selective breeding, dairy cows have been developed so they are able to produce as much as 25,000 pounds of milk every year. The average yearly volume of milk produced by a cow in the U.S. is 14,500 pounds (one quart of milk weighs 2 pounds).
In North America, there are different breeds of cow, all of which get their names from their place of origin. The Holstein-Friesian is a large black and white cow originally hailing from the Friesland province of the Netherlands. In the U.S., it’s the most common dairy breed, producing milk that has the lowest percentage of butterfat. An average Holstein-Friesian weighs about 1,500 pounds. The smaller Jersey cow breed is fawn and white or fawn colored; it’s originally from the Isle of Jersey in the Channel Islands found off the coast of England. Unlike the Holstein-Friesian breed, the Jersey cows milk is high in butterfat and weighs on average about 1,000 pounds.
From the Isle of Guernsey, which is one of the Channel Islands, comes the Guernsey cow breed. It’s fawn and white and produces milk that is yellowish in color and high in butterfat. This breed of cow weighs about 1,100 pounds. From Ayr, a county in Scotland, comes the Ayrshire cow. Red and white or mahogany and white in color, it has distinctive horns that curve upward. This breed produces large amounts of milk which is low in butterfat. Ayrshire cows weigh in at about 1,200 pounds.
From Switzerland comes the Brown Swiss cow; it’s light brown or dark brown in color and produces large amounts of milk with moderate levels of butterfat. A Brown Swiss cow weighs in at 1,400 pounds. Other breeds of cow include the the Dutch Belted which is solid black in color and had a white stripe that circles its body between its fore and hind legs. Cattle mostly raised in Quebec, Canada, are the French Canadian cow, which are small and dark brown in color.
When choosing a plush cow to take home, enuring it’s breed specific should never be a factor; its facial features are the first key to the attraction of a plush cow, closely followed by the feel of its ‘fur.’ Once that had been decided upon and it arrives at home, it will undoubtedly become the child’s favorite soft toy.

Unicorn Plush and Profile of the Unicorn
Unicorn plush are popular soft toys for children. With the ‘mysterious’ history that surrounds them, children are simply fascinated by them. Unicorn, the word, comes from the Latin meaning “one-horned.” It’s an imaginary animal that has appeared in many a legend – from Chinese to Indian to European. The unicorn has been portrayed since medieval times as a horse that has a single horn that grows from its forehead.

Lion Stuffed Animal and The Lion’s Mane
Like the real thing, the lion stuffed animal is a very regal looking plush toy. Male lion stuffed animals are particularly stunning given their head is surrounded with a thick, plush mane. Gorilla Stuffed Animals and Dian Fossey
The great thing about gorilla stuffed animals is that they’re big, bulky, and very huggable, just as plush toys should be. In her undergraduate work Dian Fossey studied as a veterinarian student, but went on to spend seven years in a Louisville, Kentucky hospital as the director of occupational therapy. She developed an interest in mountain gorillas and was very interested in seeing them in their natural habitat. In 1963, she went on a week long safari to the Congo in Africa.

Plush jungle toys are made up of some of the best stuffed animals money can buy; from elephants to giraffes to tigers, to gorillas and lions, there are so many to choose from, it’s hard to pick just one. The Amazon Jungle, or, as the Brazilians call it, “Amazonia,” is spread over 8 countries – Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, and Suriname – covering 40 percent of the South America continent. It covers a total of 2,700,000 square miles.

The Zebra Stuffed Toy and The Great Migration
While the zebra stuffed toy looks very much like a horse, it shouldn’t be mistaken for one, because it’s a zebra! Like the ‘famed’ wildebeest who make their annual migration across Africa’s Serengeti, plains zebra also migrate so they can find fresh land to graze on and water to drink. The Great Migration, as it is called, is essentially about how available grazing is, which in turn relies on how much rainfall there is.

Bulldog Stuffed Animal and Profile of the English Bulldog Breed
While some people are not all that fond of bulldogs simply because of the snorting and heavy breathing they do thanks to their their pushed-in snout, still others can’t get enough of this adorable breed. The early history of the English bulldog wasn’t a pleasant one – the breed was originally used for dog fighting and bull baiting. It’s believed the bulldog originated in the British Isles and because of the kind of ‘work’ it did, it was quite aggressive and not considered a companion animal.

Shark Stuffed Animals and Diving with Great White’s
Like the real thing, shark stuffed animals are a little frightening. Okay. A lot frightening! But that’s what makes them so interesting and different from ever other soft toy on the market. Diving to see the great white shark in its natural habitat is the thrill of a lifetime for those brave enough to go into the water with these formidable creatures. In South Africa, where many great whites can be found, cage diving is a fairly new adventure sport.

The Wolf Stuffed Animal and What the Wolf Can’t be Blamed For
For anyone interested in collecting soft toys, going with a theme makes it easier when choosing which ones to buy. With forest stuffed toys, the animal collection can consist of everything from plush moose to plush raccoons and bunnies, to the wolf stuffed animal. For many years, the wolf was on the endangered species list in the United States thanks to ranchers killing them off so as to protect their livestock from becoming their main source of food.

Interesting Facts About Plush Stuffed Animals
Before plush stuffed animals ever came along, most toys for children had been manufactured out of hard materials, such as wood or tin. Dolls were popular, but their papier-mâché or porcelain heads and bodies, stuffed with horsehair, were not comforting to cuddle. If it had not been for a bunch of felt elephant pincushions that have been given to women as gifts in 1877, who knows when plush stuffed animals would have been invented.
Those felt pincushions, were created by none other than Margarate Steiff, the creator of the first teddy bear. After she gave away the pincushions, the children of the women they were given to, liked them so much, they claimed them for themselves, loving their size and tactile qualities. Margarete began to receive so many requests for the tiny elephants that on December 29, 1880, she decided to start selling them. The first batch produced sold out quickly and soon after that, soft toys which included dogs, camels, lions, monkeys, and donkeys, formed the majority of what was her original felt store where felt petticoats and children’s clothes were made.
In 1889, Margarete’s German based company moved to Muehlstrasse, to much larger premises. It was here that in 1892, the company produced its first catalog which showed an overview of the entire range of products offered. In the same year, the company applied for a patent “for the making of animals and other figures to serve as playthings.” The patent was designed so as to avoid the trouble of imitations in the future, but ironically, that trouble eventually came to pass.
In the same year as the catalog was produced and the patent obtained, the first Steiff bear was launched. It was one of many animals which were available in a set. The tiny bear character was so popular, he was soon given the feature position amongst the set. This was the beginning of the Steiff bear journey that would see him perfected and established as the world’s most popular soft toy.
Margarete’s brother and his six sons, all played vital roles in the further development of the company. Four years after the company had been registered, it was doing so well financially, that Margarete decided to have her own stand at the Leipzig Toy Fair. The person chosen as the family representative was her nephew Richard, her brother’s second oldest son. At the time, he had just graduated from art school and would eventually become the most influential person (after his Aunt) when it came to the history of the soft toy.
Richard Steiff was responsible for designing and developing new toy lines at Margarete’s company. From the get go, he was fascinated with the possibility of having a soft toy bear and spent many hours trying to design one that children would be attracted to. He went on to make numerous sketches of bears he saw at the Stuttgart Zoo, circuses, and animal shows. It is from here that what we now know as the best plush stuffed animal ever made – the teddy bear – finally came to life.
Animals have always had great influence in our lives in one way or another, but who knew that plush stuffed animals would one day take their inspiration from them as well.

Reindeer Plush
Like with bat plush toys and Halloween, reindeer plush aren’t strictly reserved for making an appearance at Christmas; reindeer plush deserve to be around at all times of the year just like any other stuffed animal.
Reindeer, which are sometimes called caribou, are members of the deer family (which also includes moose and elk). They can be found living in Arctic tundra’s, forests and mountains of Canada, Alaska, Scandinavia, Russia, and Northern China. Wild caribou were tamed in Eurasia in the southern Altai mountain region some 5,000 years ago according to some anthropological studies. Any domesticated reindeer today, are ancestors from that stock as when attempting to domesticate wild caribou now, it has failed. Modern reindeer are used to pull sleds and some are even saddled and ridden. Some are also used for commercial sales of meat and hides.
Reindeer stand about four feet tall and six feet wide and both males (called bulls) and females (called cows) have antlers, which is unlike most other deer species. Like other deer species, however, their antlers shed every year and then regrow. Adults can weigh up to 300 pounds. They have very sharp, broad hooves (which function much like snowshoes) which makes them strong runners and gives them the ability to travel long distances across snow and ice. They also have thick brown fur which not only insulates them from the cold, but also helps them float in water making them very good swimmers. They can live to about ten years of age in the wild.
Despite being referred to with different names in North America, both domestic reindeer and caribou are the same species no matter where they are in the world. However, different varieties of reindeer have been developed in different parts of the world based on conditions and human needs, which includes transportation. For example, Chukchis have a breed that seems to have been domesticated much longer than other species and while they are great for meat production, pulling sleds is not their strong suit. Wild reindeer are known for their long migrations in which they travel further north during the summer months so they can graze on fresh grass, moss, and lichen. In the winter months, they return to warmer climates in the south where they can seek shelter.
Reindeer plush toys shouldn’t be used in any way to pull sleds, unless of course, it’s reserved for doing so in your imagination. Like other preferred stuffed animals, reindeer plush are quite content to live a lie of leisure, enjoying cuddles and hugs every now and again and perhaps a good secret or two when the mood strikes you to confide in them.
