If you are looking for a hobby, collecting teddy bears can be a lot of fun. It doesn’t take much to start your own teddy bear collection. In fact, you probably have a small one going on right now. Take a look around your room. Notice anything? That’s right, you’ve been collecting stuffed teddy bears over the years without even realizing it.
As a child many adults tend to buy teddy bears as gifts, even as you become a teenager you probably had someone give you one or two. Boyfriends tend to purchase teddy bears to show how much they care and because they know their girlfriend will think they are cute. Once you’ve become an adult you already have a collection of teddy bears waiting for you to pick up and continue on.
Children may want to collect teddy bears just because they like they way they look and can play with them. Some will want teddy bears to protect them late at night when all the scary stuff comes out in the dark, while others will simply place them on a shelf to look at. Teddy bears can help a child confide in someone if she/he is depressed, remember teddy bears will never tell.
You can find many teddy bears inside stores of all types from Wal-Mart to your local craft stores. Keep in mind if you are looking at homemade teddy bears they will be more expensive.
By going to department stores to your local talent shops you can find some nice teddy bear to collect. Prices will range from as low as a dollar to a few hundreds. You can also find a few online at places like eBay, Amazon or by simply doing a search for whatever type of teddy bear you are wanting.
Museums always have gift shops inside with all the latest merchandise from the area, which includes teddy bears. You’ll probably be able to find one that’s just for that museum and possibly a limited edition. But be careful, sometimes a museum can be pretty steep in their prices for something that you can buy cheaper outside the museum.
If you are really serious about collecting teddy bears, buy a few books on the subject so you never get charged over the price. Do your homework first before purchasing a collectors teddy bear. This way you can save your money for one that you really want.

Sometimes having a dog stuffed animal is a way to have something you love, but for a number of reasons, can’t actually have the real thing. While a dog stuffed animal can never take the place of a living, breathing pup, at the very least, it can provide a measure of comfort and companionship.
Puppy mills have been around for a long time – decades, in fact. They continue to do well because they prey on a public who are ill-informed as to what they do and who can’t resist the adorable puppy they see in the pet shop window. Even web sites selling puppies that appear to be legitimate, can be part of the puppy mill industry. If you don’t do your homework when considering the purchase [of a puppy] from a web site, you could very well end up with a puppy mill dog.
The definition of a puppy mill is “a high-volume, sub-standard dog-breeding operation, which sells purebred or mixed breed dogs, directly or indirectly to unsuspecting buyers.” They are essentially dog factories, churning out as many puppies as they can. In so doing, dogs are forced to live in small wire cages with no human companionship, comfort, or toys. Conditions in a puppy mill are nothing short of shocking to say the least. Dogs are forced to live in their own feces and urine and many of the animals suffer from severe health issues including flea infestations, parvovirus (a highly contagious and deadly virus), breathing problems, and skin conditions, to name just a few. In addition, as the fertility of breeding dogs dissipates, they are often killed, abandon, or sold cheaply to another mill so “one last litter” can be forced out of the animal.
When you make the choice not to visit the place you are purchasing your puppy from, you are often inadvertently supporting the puppy mill industry. Despite the fact that you are able to visit a retail store, it doesn’t mean you’re getting a healthy puppy; most stores that choose to sell puppies get them from puppy mills (often contrary to what they might tell you). The best way to ensure you are not buying a puppy mill dog is to not buy your pup from a store or an internet site. You can also refuse to buy any type of animal supplies from a retail store or internet site that that sells puppies.
With the huge number of dogs and puppies that are abandon and given up on a daily basis to rescue groups and animal shelters, you can save a life by going through any one of these organizations to get your pet. Most of these places are non-profit and run completely by volunteers who work tirelessly to save dogs that have come from horrific conditions – puppy mills included. Their mandate is the care and welfare of the dog and/or puppy with an overall aim is to match the dog or puppy with the right owner so the animal can have a ‘forever home.’
A dog stuffed animal really doesn’t know how lucky it is to never have lived its ‘life’ in a puppy mill. While it may wait a while on a toy store shelf until it’s chosen to go home with someone, at the very least, it doesn’t have to endure the horrendous conditions found in puppy mills. When the right person finally does come along and chooses that dog stuffed animal, it will go on to live in the lap of luxury compared to the real thing that has to endure a life in a place it never ‘asked’ to be.

There are things that you will in the long run have to grow out of when as you become older. For example, there is crying and throwing a fit of temper when you do not get your way. There is also pushing the veggies to the side on your dinner plate. One thing you can never be too old for is having stuffed animals in your room!
Having stuffed animals in your room doesn’t exactly mean you have to go to a taxidermist. Without doubt you have a teddy bear lying around in the back of the closet somewhere. What ever happened to that stuffed elephant you got when you were just a kid? You can either give them to your kids or use them to make your bedroom look less “adult-like”. Putting cute things such as stuffed animals on your bed or desk would help remind you that life doesn’t have to be all serious all the time.
There are vast amounts of ways you can use stuffed animals in your home decorating. Settle on your theme, look through the selection of animals in that category, and go for the ones that you like. Look around your home; you may be surprised at the many places you can add plush stuffed animals. Be creative, have fun and enjoy the results.
Any decor will look more together if you select a theme first. Do you like a cozy country feel to your home? Do you want something a little bit wilder and exotic? Pick something that appeals to you. Choose your furniture, rugs and draperies in colors and styles that create that mood or theme. Now add a bit of fun and life to that decor.
Let’s consider a country theme for example. Rather than just having throw pillows, why not add a large stuffed animal instead. Perch a large fluffy bunny at the end of the sofa. Imagine resting your head in the lap of a very large floppy-ear bunny! Not only is it cozy, but, it adds a great conversation piece. Select a few smaller animals such as a lamb, duck, skunk or raccoon to pose in a wicker basket lined with a small quilt or some gingham. You can even pose them against some potted or silk plants. Now step back and take a look around. Your decor looks a lot livelier, does it not?
Don’t be afraid to bring out the kid in you. No one should ever feel that once you reach adulthood, life can’t be fun. So let your imagination run wild and break out those stuffed animals!

Any child that has not had the pleasure of having a huge teddy bear, is at a distinct disadvantage to those that have. A huge teddy bear has occupied the place of the perfect friend and comforter since 1902 when teddy bear’s were first created. For the child (now an adult) that can’t tap into the nostalgia of that soft toy, it’s nothing short of tragic.
When adults see displays of huge teddy bears in a toy shop or in an online store, they are continually attracted to them, trying to recreate an experience or sensation that has become lost over time. There is no denying soft toys are an extremely important toy for children of all ages. So much so, that experience with them is more often than not, carried into adulthood. Some soft toys are so cherished, in fact, many children refuse to part with them no matter how battered and worn they become.
Just about every animal one can imagine is now replicated in a soft, miniature form. Despite the fact that some fine details may have been omitted in the quest to make the desired image, that doesn’t dissuade anyone from going on to purchase their favorite. The key to any soft toys attraction is its facial features, closely followed by the feel of its ‘fur’ or skin and then the stuffing. When teddy bear creator Margarete Steiff first made felt pincushion animals to give as gifts, the children of the mother’s they were intended for, fell so in love with their feel and size, they went on to claim them for themselves.
The key to the characterization of the huge teddy bear must fall squarely on the shoulders of Steiff’s nephew Richard. While his primary role in the Steiff company was to develop and design new toy lines, from the beginning he was fascinated by the possibilities of a soft toy bear. As a result, he spent many hours trying to design one that would be attractive to children. To this end, he made numerous sketches of bears he saw at the Stuttgart Zoo in Germany, in addition to those he saw at circuses and animal shows. His early models, in fact, were far too realistic – frightening rather than reassuring for the young people for which they were intended.
Near the end of the 19th century, Richard Steiff designed several bears that were meant to be ridden or pulled as they were positioned on all fours and set on cast-iron wheels. There were also bears produced that stood upright on their hind legs. And, despite being covered in mohair plush, they were not very huggable given some had internal metal frames and tightly stuffed woodwool making them feel too solid. In 1902, Steiff came up with a string-jointed movable animal which included a bear. It was the first such toy in the world

While there’s nothing wrong with female [lion] plush, there’s just something about the males which sets them apart.
According to a number of scientists who studied some 300 lions in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park, the lions mane is a whole lot more than just a bunch of fur framing a face; it’s a representation of how vital a lion is, what their fighting skills are like, what social status they are, and a statement about the climate in which the lion lives.
Female lions don’t have the long fur that surrounds the males face and neck and only males can grow a mane. For a long time, it was believed that the way in which a mane was shaped on the male lion was a statement about its sexual selection; males with more impressive manes were able to win over more mates and ultimately left more offspring. It was also believed that the mane created an illusion of size on the lion, making it seem like he was much bigger and fiercer than he actually was as compared to a lion with no mane at all. The lions mane has also been explained as providing the male with protection around its neck, making it difficult in a fight for another lion to grab it there.
The University of Minnesota’s Peyton West and Craig Packer published a paper in 2002 which explored many of the factors that are direct influences to the lions mane. From the information they gathered, it was revealed that the mane actually contains an abundance of details about the lions nutrition, its ability to fight, its age and health, its testosterone levels, and the climate where it lives. Both Peyton and Packer also revealed that there are two characteristics of manes that in turn give different types of information. For example: lions with darker manes compared to those that are lighter, had better nutrition, higher survival rates of their off-spring, higher testosterone levels, and their reproductive life-span was longer. The length of the mane was the second characteristic; lions with longer manes were more successful when fighting than lions with shorter manes. Climate also played a factor in length and color; in warmer habitats, lions living there had lighter, shorter manes compared to lions living in areas that were cooler. In addition, as the temperature changes through the year, an individual lion’s mane can also change in color – when it’s cooler it can be much darker than when the temperature is hotter.
The lion’s mane is what makes the lion stuffed animal stand out from other plush toys. When searching for the perfect lion stuffed animal, the look and feel of it its mane should be an important factor in deciding which one is taken home. Like lions in the wild, not all manes on the lion stuffed animal look the same.

While it might seem a little silly to give a young child extra large stuffed animals, the fact of the matter is, they will eventually grow into them, much like they will the clothes that were bought for them that were too big. No matter the age of a child, they are able to appreciate what plush toys have to offer and that includes the ones that are above average in size.
Both the toys and the play of babies, toddlers, and older children are marked by a distinct boundary. Newborn babies, for example, follow a specific individual pattern in that as they age they learn all the multi-skills toddlers and children previously developed: sucking, chewing, seeing, smiling, babbling, listening, talking, understanding, grabbing, stroking, sitting, rolling, standing up, and walking. All of these baby developments last for a period of about two years at which time toddlers gain a much better understanding of themselves and are able to interact with the environment and people that surround them.
As Sigmund Freud discovered, babies play begins very simply. It’s not manufactured toys that babies first play with, but rather, it’s with their mothers when they begin to stretch out and explore. Following that, it’s usually the rattle and/or small soft toys that are the first to be introduced. As far as history goes, rattles are among the oldest toys and are the first toys babies use. Despite the change in the rattle’s design and material over the years, its function has remained the same. Even before they acquire the skills needed for holding on to them themselves, as rattles are shaken in front of them, babies will listen and watch them.
By the time a baby is six months old, they have started to develop hand-eye coordination. While it’s often taken for granted, it’s really a complex accomplishment – one that helps the child move on to other developmental stages. At this young age, a child is also quite taken with the element of surprise. ‘Peek-a-Boo,’ for example, or ‘This Little Piggy Went to Market,” are all popular games which include the elements of anticipation and surprise. Toys that offers some of the same, are wooden jumping jacks which includes such imagery as animals and hunters. These toys have been made for some 300 years in the Grödner valley near Nuremberg; when the figures are hung up, and the cord which is attached to all the limbs, is pulled, the arms and legs move up and down.
Glove puppets are yet another type of toy which furthers imaginative play in a child; they can develop their very own character right alongside their owner. In the 1950s and 1960s, Sooty the bear and Sweep the dog were quite popular glove puppets in Britain – they were spin-offs from Harry Corbett’s Sooty television series. Life-like puppets of monkeys were also made by Schuco – the German firm. In addition to that, the industry went on to develop the glove and finger puppet in which the part of the glove that covers the palm of the hand, becomes a container for the animal family – one on each finger.
Soft toys, such as extra large stuffed animals, are both touchable and stimulating to babies; from the first soft balls which were made from leather to fabric to the modifications such as the wobbly clown, and then first manufacturing of soft toys by Margarete Steiff in 1902, in a child’ life, these have all been firm favorites. Extra large stuffed animals have gone on to become a child’s long term comfort toy- a fitting role no the matter the child’s age.
