Unique Plush Toys – Evolution of the Stuffed Animal

Most of us remember our very first stuffed animal; a teddy bear, a puppy, maybe a cuddly white bunny rabbit. Whatever it was, we remember what it felt like, what it smelled like, and most importantly, the feelings and emotional bond associated with it. For many middle-age adults, that first plush toy was a simple version of a basic stuffed animal. Flash forward to 2009 and see how times have changed. Margerete Steiff was a seamstress who started making toy stuffed animals back in 1880. She was confined to a wheelchair, but started making these plush toys as a hobby. The first plush toy she made was an elephant, as was designed to be a pin cushion. However, children began playing with them and in the years following, Steiff designed and made many other “stuffed animal toys” for children.
The origin of the teddy bear dates back to the early 1900’s and was a result of an infamous hunting trip taken by then U.S. President, Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt. From its inception, the “Teddy Bear” was an instant success in the US. So much so, that by 1906, there were numerous manufacturers making Teddy Bears, and the craze for theses adorable stuffed animals was such that ladies were carrying them, children were being photographed with them and even Teddy Roosevelt used one as a mascot in his bid for re-election.
As the years progressed, so did the Teddy Bear and other stuffed animals. They became more detailed in appearance, and manufacturers had trouble keeping up with demand. So much so, that other less common animals began emerging on the scene. The stuffed animal market was no longer limited to teddy bears, cats, and dogs as other, more unusual animals began to take their place in the plush marketplace.
In recent years, we have seen an explosion of “designer plush toys.” These are stuffed animals and unique plush toys that are typically created in limited quantities by the artist or designer. Designer plush toys can be extremely unique and distinct in nature, with each plush doll having its own specific look, feel and personality.
So what are some of these unique plush toys? Well, lets start with one that looks like a tiny microbe, only a million times its actual size. GIANTmicrobes are plush toys that are humorous, educational and fun. The GIANTmicrobes line includes The Common Cold, the Flu, Sore Throat, Stomach Ache and Kissing Disease just to name a few.
If you are looking for plush toys a little less “germy”, then consider the WorryWoos. The WooryWoo monsters, created by AndI Green, are plush dolls that help children tackle complicating feelings, from loneliness and confusion to insecurity and innocence.
If it is an unusual take on a traditional stuffed animal you seek, then look no further than Gus Fink’s Puff Dog and Stitch Kitten lines of designer plush. These creatures are extremely unique and scarily cute.
Needless to say, the evolution of the stuffed animal has provided us with a wonderful selection of unique plush toys. Whether you prefer a traditional teddy bear, a jungle cat or a plush version of the ebola virus, you will be able to find it somewhere!

Games You Can Play at a Stuffed Animal Party
Posted: Sep 03, 2009 |

For my soon to turn 6 year olds birthday this year, she decided that she wanted to have a stuffed animal party. A stuffed animal party basically means that all the little girls invited will bring their favorite plush toy so that they can all play with them together. This is a great theme, but in order to keep the young ones attention, I knew I would have to be very inventive when it comes to creating games in order to keep everyone happy.
We had ten girls invited as guests, and I knew that with those kinds of numbers it was quite possible that someone would forget their plush toy at home. So that is why I decided to have a couple extra stuffed animals and teddy bears on hand. And sure enough two girls forgot their toy. One of the girl’s forget her favorite teddy bear in her mom’s car, and the other had just lost her favorite plush dog at school. Luckily, my extras managed to head off the tears at the pass, and then we could get to the games. Here are some of the games we played, and hopefully they’ll be able to help you if you want to create your own stuffed animal party.
The Stuffed Animals Treasure Hunt
This one I had to think ahead for, as before the party started I hid a teddy bear somewhere in our house. I then used post-it notes to write down some clues. The first post-it note I gave to my daughter’s plush dog, Fluffy. This clue would lead them to the next and so on, until they (and their companion stuffed animals) finally found the teddy bear. But the game didn’t end there. The teddy bear himself contained another clue. You see, I had gotten some teddy bear cookies (to continue the theme) and hidden them also. This was a great game and all of the girls had a lot of fun.
Pin the Tail on the Bunny
While not as inventive as the treasure hunt, this variation of pin the tail is a classic for a reason. My daughter had a big stuffed bunny she had gotten for Easter. Realizing this would be perfect, I turned the bunny around so it’s back was to the girls, and made a tail out of Velcro and some bandanas. That way, the girl’s could be blindfolded, and whoever got the tail in the right place would stick with the Velcro. We played in teams, and the team that won (by pinning the tail the most times) would get to be the first to take a picture in the bunny’s lap. This kept the girl’s busy, and the prize was benign enough that we didn’t have any jealousy issues.
Stuffed Animals Fairy Tale
After stuffed animal crackers and cake, we had time for one last game. We turned their plush toys, every plush dog, stuffed cat, stuffed raccoon and teddy bear, into a character in a fairy tale. This really let them be creative, and I was careful to make sure that each little girl’s plushie got an important role. Since everyone wanted to be princesses, I let everyone do that and then they had to work together to overcome obstacles and get to the palace in time for the queen’s birthday. This imaginative game was a great success.
As you can see, everyone had a wonderful time and my daughter said this was the best birthday party she had ever had! And the best part, I was able to throw a great party without breaking my budget! My daughter decided that this was a good omen for her year six, and I have to agree. With a little bit of imagination, a stuffed animal party can be a great way for everyone to have a blast!

Easter is a big holiday, but few know all about its origin. We know that the Easter bunny comes on Easter and delivers eggs, but where did such a tradition come from? The following article will answer those questions and satisfy our personal curiosity, and give you the knowledge to answer children’s many questions on the holiday. Here is some general information on Easter itself, the Easter Bunny, and the tradition of Easter eggs.
Easter
Easter, while gaining popularity as a secular holiday with the Easter Bunny and Easter eggs, is primarily an important Christian holiday. Easter is connected to the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which happened over a three day period according to Christian faith. The day Jesus was crucified is called Good Friday, and Easter Sunday itself takes place on the day he came back to life.
Unlike the other big Christian holiday Christmas, Easter does not have a fixed date. Instead, according to Wikipedia, it falls on or after the winter equinox, March 21. From there it is calculated following the cycle of the moon. Because of this volitality, sometimes different types of Christians celebrate Easter on difference days, depending on if they are Orthodox, Catholic, or something else.
The Easter Bunny
The legend of the Easter Bunny says a rabbit brings gifts to children the night before Easter Sunday. Specifically he brings colorful eggs and candy. As for where this idea originated, that is unknown. One theory, according to Wikipedia, is that the bunny originated with a spring children’s game in the 1700’s where a being named the Oschter Haws would leave colorful eggs for good children in a nest they had built out of garments. Supposedly, over the years this idea has evolved into the more famous egg hunt.
You may have noticed that Easter decorations overwhelmingly involve the bunny rabbit, with stuffed bunnies, bunny figurines, and tons of other bunny-related items. As for why a rabbit was chosen to represent Easter, this is because few animals symbolize the season of spring better. The bunny is known for its extraordinary fertility, and spring is a time of new life, as everything begins to bloom again. This is why the Easter Bunny seems so appropriate for this spring holiday.
The Easter Eggs
Fertility really is one of the main themes of spring, which is why eggs are also an icon of the Easter holiday. The new life theme is so important that people didn’t stop with just eggs, many decorations also include little chicks and plush ducks too.
Though fertility seems to be something of a pagan idea, the egg tradition also has its roots in Christianity. The blood of Jesus was said to have spread over some eggs that were placed at the bottom of the cross he was on, where it painted the eggs red. So that’s where the idea of painting the eggs came from. In fact, further in to the tradition, once the eggs have been painted red, Christians were supposed to tap them and say an Easter incantation praising Jesus’ resurrection.
Obviously, the color choices for the eggs have evolved from the original red to multi-colored, and often pastel, but you can see where the tradition originally came from. In fact, the egg tapping itself has transformed into a different game where you tap until you find the hardest egg. In this game, the egg that survives the most taps without breaking wins.
So there you have it! The holiday of Easter has a long and interesting tradition that has evolved greatly overtime. Now that you are armed with the knowledge, you’ll be able to answer any questions those curious children you know may have. This will also help you find the most appropriate stuffed bunnies and bunny figurines to mimic the Easter Bunny. Have a happy holiday!

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Big Plush Bear and the Grizzly Bear Diet
A big plush bear should have a place in every child’s life. They are after all, the best friend and companion anyone could ever ask for. Much like a dog or cat are considered treasured members of the family, if a child’s big plush bear should ever become ‘lost’ or misplaced, panic will set in, in addition to great apprehension on the child’s part when it comes time for it to be washed.
In 2007, the University of Alberta conducted a new study on the Alberta grizzly bear to determine what kinds of food the animal was eating and what its activity patterns were. It was the most comprehensive research ever done in Canada on what grizzlies eat. Co-author of the study, Dr. Mark Boyce, remarked: “Alberta bears have remarkably diverse diets. They’ll eat just about anything.”
Over a period of three years, researchers analyzed the feces of 18 grizzly bears and also used GPS (global positioning system) for tracking. In a 24 hour period, they discovered that grizzlies accomplish lots of activities. While there is a great deal of knowledge about what bears living in mountain areas feed on, there is not as much known about the grizzly bear diet when they live in boreal forests that are also used by humans. In addition to looking at what the bears were eating, the study also examined five activities they used to find food regardless of whether they were eating fruit, flowers, insects, plants, or other animals.
According to Dr. Boyce, “the diverse diet of the Alberta grizzly bear helps cushion them against climate change and other vagaries of the environment.” The team of researchers discovered that grizzlies living in the foothills were very effective in killing both moose and deer. They were most adept at killing moose calves during the spring when other types of food such as berries, were not yet available. In comparison, bears living in the mountains were mostly vegetarian.
Forty different food items were identified by researchers and each was examined so as to determine patterns of use depending on the season. The food was also looked at closely so as to determine the differences – if any – between the foothill and mountain environments. During early spring, the grizzly diet consisted mostly of the root of sweet vetch plants while in late spring, they fed on hooved animals (like moose and deer); 83 percent of the time, the bears fed on moose especially newborns (54 percent). White tailed and mule deer were consumed 16 percent of the time while elk was eaten just 1 percent of the time. The grizzlies also ate insects (mostly ants), rodents and birds. In early summer, they ate a great deal of green vegetation in addition to ripe fruit such as berries in early August.
In terms of activity, bears living on eastern slopes were much more active in the morning and evening in comparison to bears living in Banff National Park where activity was mostly nocturnal and coming into contact with humans was more prevalent.
A big plush bear has no food habits to speak of although their owner may require them to attend a tea party or two on occasion. Coming in to contact with humans, is of course, the mainstay of a big plush bear so unlike the real thing, they are quite used to this activity on a daily basis.

Large Plush Toys and the Most Famous of all Teddy Bear’s

How Did the Tradition of the Easter Bunny Begin?
Easter is one of the most popular and observed holidays, but many of the things that we associate with Easter seem somehow out of place or unusual. Children everywhere have heard how the Easter Bunny hides eggs for kids to find or gives out candy, but how did such a bizarre tradition begin? Here is some information on the origin of the Easter Bunny, Easter eggs, and the holiday itself. Hopefully, this will help answer some of your children’s questions, and maybe yours as well!
Easter
The main importance of Easter is as a Christian holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. According to the Christian faith, Jesus was crucified on Good Friday, three days before Easter, and was resurrected on Easter Sunday. Although Easter is now a popular secular holiday, many people see it as primarily a religious celebration. Easter is closely associated with the Jewish tradition of Passover, an eight day feast commemorating the freedom of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt.
While most holidays, like the 4th of July in the United States or the Christian holiday of Christmas, occur on the same date every year, Easter has no fixed date, although it always falls on a Sunday. Easter is usually celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal, or Spring, equinox, March 21. This means that Easter can occur anytime between March 22 and April 25. However, some churches in Eastern countries choose to celebrate Easter based on the date of Passover instead of the previous formula.
The name Easter comes from the Norse goddesses “Ostra” or “Ostern,” who were feasted on the vernal equinox. The early Christian church adopted the name for this feast in order to placate Teutonic people who still wanted to observe the pagan fertility ritual, but were willing to recognize the Christian resurrection at the same time.
The Easter Bunny
The Easter Bunny is the colorful and friendly rabbit that brings gifts, including decorated eggs and candy, on the night before Easter Sunday. While the true origin of the Easter Bunny is open to debate, one popular theory is that a man named Oschter Haws left colorful eggs for good children in the 18th century. This, in turn, led to Easter egg hunts.
The rabbit, a long-time symbol of fertility and spring, is a natural choice to be used for Easter decorating. There are cute stuffed bunnies, rabbit figurines, bunny coloring pages, and lots of other items with a rabbit theme. The Easter Bunny is a friendly symbol of spring, popular among children for hundreds of years.
The Easter Eggs
Spring is a time of renewal. New life and new growth are powerful themes. In addition to the aforementioned Easter Bunny, eggs are another important symbol of Easter. Easter eggs are the most used decoration for the occasion, but tiny baby chicks or plush ducks are also popular.
The egg tradition is not strictly related to the pagan celebration, but has ties to Christianity as well. It is said that when Jesus was on the cross, there were eggs at the base of the cross which were stained red with the blood of Christ. This is the presumed origin of painting eggs red, or other colors. Many Christians follow a tradition of praising the resurrection of Christ over the painted eggs.
Today, we paint the Easter eggs many different colors, even including pastel, multi-colored eggs. The tradition of tapping the eggs while saying an incantation praising the resurrection of Jesus Christ has become a game where people tap the eggs until the hardest egg is discovered. The egg that remains unbroken the longest is the winner.
That concludes this brief survey of the Easter tradition. As you can see, it has changed a lot over the years. Hopefully, this will answer any questions from the kids. Have fun decorating your house with painted eggs, stuffed bunnies, and plush chicks. Happy Easter!
So feed your appetite for all that nice Easter decoration mentioned in the article! Find great stuffed bunnies, bunny figurines, plush chicks and many more amazing plush stuffed toys at KCPlush.com and get into the Easter spirit.

Why Plush Toys Are Meaningful Gifts
Some of us may think that stuffed animals are a thing of the past, as they no longer seem to be the “it” toy. You may often decide to not give a stuffed animal for a gift, and instead get something more practical, because after all, what point does a plush toy have? What reason is there to get a stuffed animal?
The answer to that is: plenty. Stuffed animals can be very meaningful, and symbolize important events or people. This is truly a timeless gift, and we all need to be reminded of that! Let’s look at why plush toys are important in the lives of three particular age groups: kids, teenagers, and adults.
Kid’s Symbols
There is no such thing as too many stuffed animals for children. Kids love collecting plush toys of all kinds, and they could always use more. What could possibly symbolize the innocence of childhood better than a soft and lovable stuffed animal? In our own childhood, we probably spent many a night cuddling up to our favorite plush bunny or bear. Children enjoy the comfort of a stuffed animal, and that comfort is a great nightmare repellant! In fact, those who say that stuffed animals aren’t in “it” toy anymore, haven’t been paying attention to what’s happening in the world of little girls. Stuffed animals are darn right “fashionable” for girls to have. Many girls will get a natural appearing plush cat or plush dog, just so they can carry it around in their little purses as they emulate fashionable women carrying around their small pets. Stuffed animals have certainly not gone out of style!
Teenager’s Symbols
Teenagers may not play with toys any more, but stuffed animals aren’t just a toy. They are a confidant and a comfort. In fact, many teenage girls have more stuffed animals now than they did when they were young. This is because stuffed animals often symbolize love or a crush. They are keepsakes. For example, a teenage girl will really cherish that little plush dolphin that her boyfriend gave her because he knows that dolphins are her favorite animals. Or maybe her father gives her a stuffed bear as she’s on the way out the door for college, so she will never be alone.
But it’s not just girls who can cherish stuffed animals. Teenage boys can also enjoy them a lot too. Boys often keep them as a reminder of something they did that was brave or impressive. For example, maybe they love keeping around that stuffed tiger they received after winning a sports game. Or maybe they have a huge stuffed lion they won at a boardwalk after proving their prowess at a darts game or baseball stand. To them, stuffed animals are a symbol of accomplishment and pride.
Adult’s Symbols
Lastly, stuffed animals can also be enjoyed by adults, though for different reasons than the kids and teenagers enjoy them. The majority of adults use stuffed animals as a decorative item. They will search for natural, classy appearing plush toy figurines or stuffed animals that can add little touches to their home or vacation home. For example, a dolphin plushie in their vacation home on the ocean, or a tiger to make their home more exotic and fit in with a jungle theme. Hallways and entrances can be embellished with stuffed lions, black bears, or even plush dogs as decoration to give a unique touch. Part of this too, is that stuffed animals for adults are more of a collectible than a toy. Many adults are true collectors, who have large collections to capture that nostalgic feeling from childhood. In fact, it’s not uncommon to realize someone you knows has kept an old teddy bear for 20 years because of the meanings it carries.
So as you can see, stuffed animals will never go out of style for any age group. They continue to symbolize and carry meaning of all kinds. Never discount the importance of stuffed animals!
