The Changing Face of the Teddy Bear

When most of us think of the teddy bear, we see him as a cuddly, possibly chubby, cute faced soft and lovable toy but he has not always looked like this.
Let’s see…..
As we all know, the teddy bear was born in Germany in 1902. The first teddy bear took his looks from the ‘real’ bear in that he had a very long pointed muzzle, long limbs and a hump on his back so that when he was put down on all fours he looked just like a ‘real’ bear. At first, jointing the teddy bear was a bit of a problem for Steiff but very soon this was resolved. The first teddy bear was given a wax nose but this was soon replaced by a ‘stitched’ nose. So very gradually the teddy bear that we know and love today gradually emerged, even within the company that created him, he began to change his characteristics.
The teddy bears popularity soon spread right across the western world and not long after his birth, soft toy companies on both sides of the Atlantic began to produce their own versions of the teddy bear. In the United States, President Roosevelt (who gave his name to the Teddy Bear) was very quick to recognise the great appeal of the teddy bear, infact, he used the teddy as a mascot for the rest of his political career and when Roosevelt entered halls for discussions the music ‘Teddy Bears Picnic’ was often played. However, in 1904, during the presidential elections, the very recently formed Ideal Novelty and Toy Co. produced teddy bears that could be handed out to potential voters of Roosevelt. These teddy bears were just 15 cms tall and they had very large and rather staring eyes (these particular eyes were known as Googly eyes). Some of the most popular dolls of that time had these very odd eyes and so, we would guess, that this is where the idea of using them came from. Later on, the Ideal Co. had teddy bears made with broad foreheards, large ears (which were set wide apart) and wedge-shaped muzzled, giving these teddy bears a somewhat triangular appearance. Some of these teddy bears had noses made of broad-cloth (a fine and very closely woven frabric) but most were stitched.
Back in Britain companies such as J.K. Farnell, W.J. Terry and Dean’s Rag Book Company had began to produce their very own versions of the teddy bear. The teddy bear craze hit Britain around 1908, maybe this was due to the fact that Britain had it’s very own “teddy” in Edward VII. However, the first company to produce jointed teddy bears in Britain was the J.K. Farnell Company. The teddy bears which they produced became even more popular with the onset of the First World War due to all German products (which sadly included teddy bears) being banned.
In 1912 the Farnell teddy bear was much like the German teddy bear in his looks, but he had somewhat shorter limbs (this was a characteristic that was to prove to be very popular with British soft toy companies by the 1930′s). These bears however, did lack the famous german bears ‘hump’ on his back, but they did keep the somewhat pointed muzzle.
In 1915 the British Company Chiltern produced very interesting but extremely ‘different’ teddy bears whom they called Master Teddy. Master Teddy was available in five sizes. He had googly eyes, which were typical of the period and which mimiced the popular animal cariactures of the time. Master Teddy was also ‘dressed’ in a pink and white check shirt and blue felt trousers, which had a big red patch on the right knee and these trousers were held up with some webbed braces. Master Teddy certainly lead the way for many manufacturers, it allowed them to be a little more wild in their thoughts and designs for their teddy bears.
In 1927, the famous German company Schuco produced their Piccolo series of gorgeous miniature, jointed mohair-plush toy animals, which also included little teddy bears. In 1927 Schuco produced little novelty teddy bears, which were made into lipsticks, mirrors and compacts which could be carried in ladies handbags, they also produced scent bottle teddy bears. The little Schuco teddy bears were constructed of a unique metal frame which were then covered in a very short mohair plush material, their limbs were straight and short, nothing like the long limbed teddy bears that Steiff first produced. Again, these gorgeous little teddy bears, although of German origin, changed the teddy bear’s shape and looks quite radically.
So as time rolled on in the teddy bear world we had companies like the British firm, Wendy Boston who produced unjointed teddy bears that were fully washable, but whose shape had changed, as these teddy bears looked more ‘flat’ than the original teddy bears. We also saw many companies producing ‘open-mouthed’ teddy bears and many British companies produced teddy bears with ‘plastic’ noses – which were styled on a little dog’s nose.
However, we have to include in this article the very famous and extremely loved Merrythought Cheeky Bears when we look at the changing face of the teddy bear. The Cheeky Bear was introduced to teddy bear lovers in the 1950′s and was radically different to what we know as the Classic Teddy Bear. What about the Merrythought Punkin Head Bear? What, I wonder would Richard Steiff say about this very popular teddy bear?
Today, we are use to seeing Artist Teddy Bears. Not all of these bears have the Classic Teddy Bear looks, many teddy bear artists have turned the classic teddy bears looks completely upside down. Some of them only vaguely resemble what we would first think of as a teddy bear. They come in pratically every colour you can think of, sometimes they are even multi-coloured, leaving behind the classic teddy bear colours. Many of these bears are termed as ‘art pieces’.
Who would ever have thought back in 1902 when Richard Steiff invented the great old teddy bear, that his face would change to the extent that it has, especially over the last few decades.
To sum up then, the teddy bear can look however we want him to look but there is no disputing that regardless of his appearance the teddy bear has retained his gentle and kind manner. No matter how he looks, the great and reliable teddy bear is always Mans Very Best Friend and Companion.

I Love You Teddy Bear

Was there ever a time in your life when you turned and whispered “I love you teddy bear” to your most cherished companion? The teddy bear that was with you, in your crib, from the day you were born? The one you came home and cried to when you fell off your bike and scraped your knee on the sidewalk? The one that kept you company when you were forced to remain indoors after your contracted chicken pox? If you never told your teddy bear how you felt about him or her, that would be a surprise. After all, teddy bears all over the world are used to hearing “I love you teddy bear,” at one time or another in their long lives.
Children everywhere (and even some adults), have been in love with their teddy bears ever since they were innocently first created as felt pincushions to be given to family and friends as gifts. What began as nothing more than a small elephant Margarete Steiff made in felt from a do-it-yourself pattern she found in a popular German magazine, turned into the most iconic plush toy of all time.
Maragarete was so pleased with the result of her first felt pincushion she decided to make others to give away. When children saw their mothers’ elephant pincushions, they claimed them for themselves, loving their size and softness. Margarete received so many requests for the pincushions, on December 29, 1889, she decided to start selling them. What had begun as merely a dressmaking business, quickly turned into the sale of soft toys (including lions, dogs, camels, monkeys, and donkeys), which eventually made up the majority of sales at Margarete’s company; 5,170 elephants were sold in 1886.
The company moved to larger premises in 1889 and went on to produce its first catalogue in 1892 which showcased its entire range of ‘toy’ animal products. In the same year, the company applied for a patent “for the making of animals and other figures to serve as playthings.” The launch of the first Steiff bear also took place in 1892 which was just one of many animals available for purchase in a set. The little bear was a hugely popular character and soon became the most important in the animal set.
The Steiff bear had begun its journey to what we would eventually see perfected and established as the world’s most popular toy.
And so too began the idea that one could be in love with their plush toys, specifically with the teddy bear. Saying “I love you teddy bear” to your favorite plush toy is no more unusual than saying it to the family dog or cat. Like with them, children and adults form close and passionate attachments to particular soft toys and as is the case, the “I love you teddy bear” sentiment really isn’t unusual at all.

If you are looking for a hobby, collecting teddy bears can be a lot of fun. It doesn’t take much to start your own teddy bear collection. In fact, you probably have a small one going on right now. Take a look around your room. Notice anything? That’s right, you’ve been collecting stuffed teddy bears over the years without even realizing it.
As a child many adults tend to buy teddy bears as gifts, even as you become a teenager you probably had someone give you one or two. Boyfriends tend to purchase teddy bears to show how much they care and because they know their girlfriend will think they are cute. Once you’ve become an adult you already have a collection of teddy bears waiting for you to pick up and continue on.
Children may want to collect teddy bears just because they like they way they look and can play with them. Some will want teddy bears to protect them late at night when all the scary stuff comes out in the dark, while others will simply place them on a shelf to look at. Teddy bears can help a child confide in someone if she/he is depressed, remember teddy bears will never tell.
You can find many teddy bears inside stores of all types from Wal-Mart to your local craft stores. Keep in mind if you are looking at homemade teddy bears they will be more expensive.
By going to department stores to your local talent shops you can find some nice teddy bear to collect. Prices will range from as low as a dollar to a few hundreds. You can also find a few online at places like eBay, Amazon or by simply doing a search for whatever type of teddy bear you are wanting.
Museums always have gift shops inside with all the latest merchandise from the area, which includes teddy bears. You’ll probably be able to find one that’s just for that museum and possibly a limited edition. But be careful, sometimes a museum can be pretty steep in their prices for something that you can buy cheaper outside the museum.
If you are really serious about collecting teddy bears, buy a few books on the subject so you never get charged over the price. Do your homework first before purchasing a collectors teddy bear. This way you can save your money for one that you really want.

If you’re a teddy bear connoisseur, then you know the following: teddy bears were first named after U.S. president Theodore Roosevelt in 1902. Teddy bears were first displayed in an American shop window in 1902. In 1903, in Germany, a seamstress named Margaret Steiff added plush bears to the Steiff catalog and sold 3000 of them to U.S. customers. In 1955, plush bears were used by surgeons in the operating room to assist in putting children to sleep prior to surgery. Teddy bears heal the hearts and minds of children and adults alike when they’re down or feeling ill. Christopher Robin received a bear for his first birthday – the bear we now know as Winnie the Pooh. Plush bears come in all sizes – small, medium, and large.
You don’t have to be up on all there is to know about teddy bears to appreciate them. Like with all stuffed animals, it’s more important to gauge how you feel when you hold one. Given their popularity, it doesn’t seem to matter what size a plush bear is in order for you to fall instantly in love with them. But, if you’re looking for the ultimate snuggle, large teddy bears should be your first choice. Even the most famous stuffed bear in the world, Winnie the Pooh, comes in a large size.
With large bears, there is just that much more to cuddle and cozy up to. Whether you choose a huge plush bear to display in a collection or to simply sit on your bed, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to resist the urge to hug them.
What is it that makes plush bears so special? Is it their size, their color? Their smile, their roly-poly belly? Or, is it the magic power they seem to wield whenever we look at them? Whatever it is, large teddy bears are simply irresistible!
If you happen to own a dog, you may be surprised to learn that your canine companion can be just as enamored with large bears as you or a child. Dogs will typically carry them around just like a child will and will lie on them like a pillow. In the same way large plush bears can be comforting to us, they are a comfort to dogs as well.
There is a certain heart-warming charm about large bears. Their irresistibly soft fur and sweet faces are enough to make even the toughest critic melt. The next time you feel like you don’t have a friend in the world, give a large plush bear a big bear-hug and watch all your troubles amazingly disappear.

Everyone loves to get teddy bears for newborns when they are born. Teddy bears are designed for newborns safety, which makes them one of the safest toys to get them. The most popular teddy bear to get a newborn is the soft plush teddy bears. These bears have no hard objects on them, so no worrying about choking hazards. They are soft enough that if your baby actually gets a hold of it and smacks himself in the face it isn’t going to hurt.

The Husky Plush Toy and Lessons from Sled Dogs

The husky plush toy is one of those soft dog toys which cater to those interested in getting breed specific with their stuffed animals. Some husky plush are so well made in fact, they look just like the real thing.
When (and if) we think of racing dogs, we think of the sled dogs that are the ultimate in canine athletics. In the world’s longest sled race – the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race – held every March, the very best ultra-endurance dogs compete in a grueling 1,100 mile trek that takes them from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska. No one has ever been entirely sure how these animals were able to withstand temperatures that drop as low as -40 Fahrenheit, 60 mile per hour winds, and heavy blizzards, but one Dr. Michael Davis has been focusing on ‘the how’ for more than ten years.
What Dr. Davis found was the most amazing in these sled dogs, was their “their ability to rapidly adapt to sustained strenuous exercise in 24-48 hours.” It’s a fact that the metabolic changes of a conditioned dog are much the same as those of an athlete on the first day they compete in human endurance tests and/or races; their muscle energy reserves deplete, stress hormones increase, and cellular injury takes place (in their proteins and DNA, for example). Over a period of several, back to back days in which a human exercises at the same level of intensity, all the changes that went on in their body become reversed. Four days after sled dogs started ongoing strenuous exercise, however, their metabolic profile went right back to the way it started before they began racing. When a human athlete gets tired, they will stay tired until they have fully recovered, which can sometimes take an entire day.
Dr. Davis also found that the aerobic capacity in a trained sled dog as compared to that in an untrained one, was twice as high when measuring the ratio of volume of oxygen to body weight. In addition, when sled dogs were in racing mode, they were able to burn up to 12,000 kilo calories on a daily basis. In other words, a sled dog weighing in at 55 pounds could conceivably consume 24 McDonald’s Big Macs so as to fuel themselves for running; a running dog consumes a high fat diet which in turn is converted to energy in their liver and when they first begin exercising it acts as fuel. If a human being were able to absorb and process all the fat found in a McDonald’s burger, they would need to eat 72 Bic Macs to fuel the power to run over a day’s time.
Ultimately, Dr. Davis says sled dogs “are one-of-a-kind athletes. What we learn from them will undoubtedly tell us a lot about human performance as well.”
The husky plush toy won’t ever have a need to run unless of course it’s in some imaginary race dreamed up by its owner. While both the husky breed and the husky plush animal would undoubtedly love to be able to eat dozens of Big Macs, they will both have to settle for something less – for the real thing, a diet of dog food chosen by their owner, and, for the plush toy, some type of imaginary food if they’re lucky.
